The Department offers myeloablative therapy with autologous and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from either related or unrelated donors, which is a highly recognized option for treatment of patients suffering from lymphoma, myeloma, leukaemia, and other malignancies.  The Department operates a Leukapheresis Unit and a Stem Cell Bank, which allows for collection, engineering, and cryopreservation of haematopoietic stem cells from peripheral blood.  Bone marrow harvested under general anaesthesia represents yet another, alternative source of the transplant material.  Patients’ rooms have been furnished with laminar air-flow, positive air pressure, and HEPA filters for effective infection protection.

Cooperation with other departments of the Institute of Oncology allows for application of total body irradiation, total marrow irradiation, as well as other personalized radiotherapeutic techniques combined with high-dose chemotherapy.  Broad diagnostic tools, including PET, flow cytometry, cytogenetics, and molecular methods, are available on-site.  Hence, an accurate evaluation of the disease is possible at the time of the transplantation so that individual preparative regimens may be prepared and the outcome monitored. The availability of all therapeutic and diagnostic tools in one building contributes to optimum timing of the procedure, without any need for transportation.

The transplant team comprises specialists in clinical transplantology, hematology, internal diseases and laboratory diagnostics.  All the physicians and nurses are well experienced in the field of bone marrow transplantation.  The head of the Department, prof. Sebastian Giebel, serves as Vice-President of The Polish Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine, Secretary of Acute Leukaemia Working Party of the European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), President of the Polish Lymphoma Research Group, and Secretary of the Polish Adult Leukaemia Group (PALG).  In the 90’s, Prof. Jerzy Holowiecki, Consultant of the Department, was among the bone marrow transplantation pioneers in Poland and is now honorary member of the EBMT and President of the PALG

The Department works on both clinical and basic scientific projects.  Our aim is to optimize the transplantation procedure and to identify immunological mechanisms involved in the tumor suppressant process.
